I Hired A Fiverr Guy To Run My Google Ads. Heres What I Learned.
Fiverr Website
Yes thats exactly what I did. A while back when I first got started running a small startup agency I was outsourcing work. Like the gurus say “it doesnt matter if you dont know how to run ads. you can just pay someone that does”
Lemme stop you right there.
it. does. matter.
you. dont. want. to hire someonone that “does”
While I dont doubt theres some guy in pakistan or the philippines whos ripping it on ad accounts I wouldn’t go this route when starting new. Speaking from experience. Let me tell you a story. When I was selling PPC services I didnt have time to fullfill. the only other option was to outsource the work to fiverr or upwork.
Back then I remember signing a client and immediately going to fiverr.
I was excited that I landed a new client after hours of pounding the phone.
“are you interested in move out cleaning leads for your business?”
house cleaning was the vertical that I decided to go with back then.
about 80% of the time these cold calls were crap. most would say “we have enough leads” (which is a lie of course) yet, every now & then I would come across someone who would try to brush me off & then I would ask the magical question: Are you interested in move out cleaning leads for your business?”
as soon as they heard they would say yes. And I would immediately set a followup phone call & send an email to them with a video crappy presentation of google ads. I mean the video I sent them after they agreed to a follow up call was shot back when google ads was called ad words.
Nonetheless it was just another touch point.
that was the vertical that invested my time into with google in the beginning.
heres the screenshot to show how much money I wasted.
Cost = $923.13 - This was without Ad spend
flushing cash down the toilet while trying anxiously trying to find a contractor.
I even got the bright idea to do facebook ads & microsoft / bing ads first before going straight to google.
Knowing what I know now Google PPC is king for home service business because people are searching for the solution to their problem right away. Whereas on facebook they are not browsing with intent to buy. The user is on facebook for entertainment.
the freelancer that I hired was using old techniques. single keyword ad groups. this technique was popular 5 years ago. today not so much. I also recall being anxious about this freelancer. after he setup the campaign and turned it on the days would go by. nothing. and then I made an even bigger mistake.
Because I didnt have any experience I didnt necesarily know when I was going to get results. if it was too son or too late. so I did what anyone would do in this situation. After a week I didnt see any conversions so I ended up changing a few things. then the next day I changed the campaigns again.
this is a big no no. Because there was no thought to my strategy and pre-maturely changing things in google ads is a surefire way to spread yourself too thin. To say the least I ended up refunding this client. So the choice is always yours. Learn from my mistakes rather than making your own and hopefully you wont waste money like I did.
If I could go back in time I would do things different given I can get results by myself.
takeaways
Freelancers are only there to take direction from you. they aren’t responsible for driving results.
To get results your going to have to pay top dollar. theres no way around this.
You get what you pay for. Hire cheap & your going to waste more time fixing mistakes.
Pay top dollar for a professional or waste money by testing out freelancers.
Without prior experience to running google ads your going to blow your budget quick.
There is a learning curve to both conversion tracking & managing google campaigns.
Costs add up quickly when you factor in conversion tracking setup, campaign setup, campaign management and adspend all together.
